Fieldnotes: Rain
Bringing wonder to everyday moments
Clouds cover in quilts like blankets, tucking me in like a child. They gently shush the sun like a patient mother, and shadows grow as the golden light rays become quiet. Today is not a day to be bright and loud. Today is a lovely opportunity to be listless and small.
The quickening wind delivers relief in cold moisture and creosote fragrance — a desert sensory robe to serve as the day’s outfit. The thirst inside my lungs is finally quenched as the gentle purring begins against the roof and walls, a thousand happy kittens kneading the ground in asynchrony.
Puddles amass on the parking lot, reflecting what light is left: even if I look down, I am still looking up. The sky demands my attention and I am more than content to oblige.
Water finds its way nearly everywhere, collecting on leaves and flowers and feathers. Raindrops clang against metal cars as the surrounding plants begin to nurse. The vehicles’ metallic paint attempts to mirror the rain’s glimmer, as if trying to deceive me that they too are natural. Pretty, yes, but still they don’t belong. The streams that glide along their surface tell of a smoothness too smooth and a shimmer too perfect.
My eyes, instead, are drawn to the mud.
I’d love to invite you to leave your own observations of rain in the comments below :D
